The much-loved Silver Wind cruise ship is set to become an expedition vessel. Silversea Cruises have announced the boutique, ultra-luxury cruise ship is undergoing a major ice-class upgrade ahead of its first Antarctic expedition in November this year.

When Silver Wind debuted in 1995 she set new standards for luxury cruising. Now, the ice-class conversion will raise the bar once more providing guests with what promises to be the ultimate in luxury expedition cruising.

“We are converting our beloved Silver Wind into one of the most luxurious expedition ships at sea to further expand and diversify our cold-water cruise offering.”

Roberto Martinoli, Silversea’s President and CEO

More sustainable

The expedition redesign of Silver Wind includes an ice-strengthened hull as well as state-of-the-art technology upgrades for cruising in polar waters. In addition, Silver Wind will reduce her impact on the sensitive environment thanks to the installation of an advanced waste water treatment plant, new food waste treatment facilities, and new fuel-saving boilers.

New ways to experience the wilderness

Silver Wind will be fitted with a fleet of 24 Zodiacs and 14 kayaks so guests can get closer to the great white wilderness of Antarctica. There will be up to 28 expedition guides to show guests the most enthralling locales. These guides will also share their knowledge during immersive lectures.

What to expect on the expedition Silver Wind

The top suites on Silver Wind will get a major Silver-Muse style upgrade. The Owner’s, Grand and Royal Suites will each receive new furniture and carpets. They will also get new walk-in showers to complement the bathtubs.

Vista and Veranda suites will also get an update, most notably with the installation of new walk-in showers.

Most of Silver Wind’s public areas will get a make-over too. There will be repainting in La Dame, La Terrazza, the Observation and Panorama Lounges, as well as a refresh in the reception area, gym and spa.

But perhaps most intriguing will be the changes to the ship’s swimming pool. A new heating system will make the water warm enough to swim whilst cruising the ice-cold polar seas.

In addition, the capacity of Silver Wind will be reduced from 296 to 274-guests.

Silver Wind expedition launch

Silver Wind’s maiden voyage as an expedition ship is due to depart on 20 November 2021. The 22-day voyage will sail from Buenos Aires and take in the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula.

However, the highlight of this unforgettable journey is sure to be a solar eclipse. This will occur on 4 December 2021 and Silver Wind will be perfectly poised to witness it.
