A four-decade mariner steps onto the bridge
Crystal has appointed Captain Placido Libro as master of Crystal Serenity, effective August 14, 2026. He succeeds Captain Birger J. Vorland, who recently closed out nearly five decades with the brand.
“It is an extraordinary honor to take command of Crystal Serenity, a ship known for delivering some of the finest experiences at sea. I look forward to working alongside our exceptional officers and crew to create memorable experiences for our guests while upholding the highest standards of safety, service and operational excellence.”
Captain Placido Libro

Libro brings more than 40 years of maritime experience to the role. He joined Crystal in 2024 as Director of Maritime Affairs, supporting fleet operations and overseeing key phases of construction on Crystal Grace—the line’s first new ocean ship in more than 25 years. He is set to captain Crystal Grace during her inaugural season in 2028.
A career built across the world’s shipyards and seas
Libro graduated from the Nautical Institute of Messina in Sicily in 1983 and began his career as an officer in the Italian Navy, serving until 1987 and reaching the rank of lieutenant. He went on to work as a deck officer aboard merchant vessels, ferries and passenger ships, earning his master’s license in 1989.
His résumé since spans deck officer, safety officer, staff captain and captain roles with operators including Costa, Carnival and Silversea. He has also worked as a newbuild superintendent, overseeing construction on roughly ten passenger ships, and served as a designated person ashore for a ferry company.
