The art of exceptional dining – a feast for the senses

If exceptional cuisine is what you live for, Crystal Serenity’s dining collection will feel like a gift from the culinary gods. Nine venues span the full spectrum of the dining experience, from the relaxed pleasures of an alfresco gelato on a warm afternoon to the rarefied heights of Japanese-Nikkei cuisine prepared in the tradition of one of the world’s most celebrated chefs. The cuisine is, without question, among the most compelling reasons to choose Crystal Serenity.

Umi Uma – the gastronomic high altar

Umi Uma occupies the very pinnacle of Crystal Serenity’s dining hierarchy, and with good reason. The restaurant draws its inspiration from the Nikkei tradition – a fascinating culinary conversation between Japan and Peru that was shaped by the formative years Michelin-starred chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa spent cooking in South America.

The results are nothing short of extraordinary. Sashimi of astounding quality anchors the menu, alongside signature dishes that have made Matsuhisa’s name synonymous with culinary innovation. Tuna Tataki with Cilantro Sauce is a masterclass in balance, while the Toro Tartare with Caviar is the kind of dish that stops conversation at the table.

The famous Lobster with Truffle-Yuzu, Garlic, Asparagus, Shiitake Mushrooms and Snap Peas is a tour de force, and the signature Black Cod in Miso remains as beguiling as ever. For those with an appetite for something more robust, the Wagyu Beef Filet Steak arrives with Anticucho, Teriyaki and Matsuhisa’s signature Wasabi Pepper sauce – a triumphant finale to an already exceptional evening.

Umi Uma is open for dinner only, from 6:30pm to 9:00pm. Reservations are essential.

Osteria d’Ovidio – la dolce vita at sea

Named for Crystal co-owner Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, Osteria d’Ovidio is a heartfelt tribute to Italian culinary tradition, realised through the extraordinary talent of three Michelin-starred chef Massimiliano Alajmo. The menu is structured in three acts – Italia, Le Calandre and Venezia – a composition as elegantly conceived as any Italian opera.

Osteria d’Ovidio channels Italian elegance through refined simplicity.

Italia celebrates the classics of the peninsula with dishes like the Costoletta alla Milanese, a beautifully rendered breaded veal cutlet with rocket and tomatoes. Le Calandre reaches deeper into Alajmo’s creative canon, presenting the celebrated Cuttlefish with its ink and a silken light potato cream. Not to mention his sublime Tagliolini al Fumo – al dente egg pasta perfumed with smoked butter.

With Venezia, the chef reimagines the flavors of his home city with refinements like Cold-cooked lettuce with vegetable tartare, and Sea bass alongside a lemon potato purée, verbena oil and sautéed vegetables. Each section of the menu can be enjoyed as a full degustation or cherry-picked for à la carte dining – a thoughtful touch that suits every table.

Even the crockery tells a story. The plates are decorated only halfway round – one half adorned to represent the rich heritage of Italian culinary history, the other left deliberately blank, a canvas for the chapters yet to be written. It is a quietly poetic touch that speaks to the philosophy of the restaurant itself.

Beefbar – reinventing the steakhouse at sea

Crystal’s collaboration with Monte Carlo’s acclaimed Beefbar represents a genuinely new direction for steakhouse dining on the high seas. This is not the predictable surf-and-turf territory of lesser ships – this is a considered, cosmopolitan venue that surprises at both lunch and dinner.

At midday, the menu takes a pleasingly global turn with Korean bao buns filled with jasmine tea-smoked Wagyu beef and a vibrant Quinoa Superbowl with cucumber, fresh avocado and cherry tomatoes.

Come evening, the focus shifts to prime cuts sourced from celebrated regions including Australia, Namibia, Japan and the USA – each meticulously selected for its quality and flavor profile, and paired with signature sauces, among them the Paradise Pepper and the house Beefbar sauce.

Beefbar is open for lunch from noon to 2:00pm and for dinner from 6:30pm to 9:00pm. Dinner reservations are essential.

Waterside Restaurant – effortless sophistication

Waterside is the main dining room, but that description barely does it justice. This is a restaurant that consistently delivers some of the finest cuisine at sea, and it does so with an ease and polish that feels entirely effortless.

The evening menu is a study in confident, produce-led cooking. Australian Wagyu Beef Tartare arrives with black garlic aïoli, a confit egg yolk, parmesan tuile and anchovies – a dish of real depth and elegance.

Dover Sole “Amandine” with melted butter, toasted almonds, glazed vegetables and fingerling potatoes is a classic executed with precision. And the Traditional Tarte au Citron, served with a dreamy Crème Chantilly, is the kind of dessert you will still be thinking about long after the voyage is over.

Waterside is especially popular in the evenings, particularly for early sittings. It is also open for breakfast from 8:00am to 9:30am and for lunch on select days from noon to 1:30pm. Dinner is served from 6:30pm to 9:00pm. Reservations are not required.

Marketplace – the buffet reimagined

Not all buffets are created equal, and Marketplace emphatically makes the case for its own excellence. At breakfast there is a well-curated selection of hot and cold choices, while lunchtime reveals the full ambition of the kitchen – creamy Normandy oysters, perfectly prepared fish, roasted meats and a dizzying array of desserts that would not look out of place in a fine patisserie.

Marketplace is open for breakfast from 6:30am to 10:00am and for lunch from noon to 1:30pm. Reservations are not required.

The Trident Grill – casual classics done well

For those who rise a little later, The Trident Grill serves a late-risers breakfast before transitioning into a relaxed lunchtime menu of burgers, melts and strip steak cooked to order, rounded out with crispy fries and refreshing salads. It is unpretentious, reliable and very popular.

Breakfast is served from 10:00am to 11:00am and lunch from 11:30am to 6:00pm. Reservations are not required.

The Bistro – the soul of the ship

Every great ship needs a gathering place, and on Crystal Serenity that role belongs to The Bistro. The coffee here is genuinely excellent – the kind that can recalibrate your entire morning – and the tempting array of snacks and sweet treats makes it dangerously easy to linger. It is consistently among the most popular venues on board, and it is not hard to see why.

The Bistro is open from 6:30am to 6:00pm.

The Vintage Room – private dining par excellence

For a truly memorable occasion, The Vintage Room offers an experience entirely in a class of its own. This sumptuously decorated private dining space presents a bespoke degustation menu crafted by the head chef, paired with wines drawn from Crystal Serenity’s impressive cellar. It is the kind of evening that stays with you long after you have disembarked.

Scoops Gelato Bar – the sweetest punctuation

No day aboard Crystal Serenity is complete without a visit to Scoops. Here, authentic Italian-style gelato is served al fresco with a gentle sea breeze for company. Choose from the classics or indulge in one of Crystal’s own inspired creations. It is a simple pleasure, and a perfect one.

Scoops is open from noon to 6:00pm.

The verdict

Taken together, Crystal Serenity’s dining collection is a remarkable achievement. From the Michelin-starred brilliance of Umi Uma and Osteria d’Ovidio to the casual pleasures of an afternoon gelato on deck, the ship offers a culinary journey as rich and varied as the destinations it visits. For anyone who believes that great food is as essential as great scenery, this is a ship that will not disappoint.
