Cruise ships are quietly cleaning up their act—here’s what it means for your next voyage

If you’ve ever wondered what your love of small-ship cruising actually costs the ocean you’re sailing across, the cruise industry’s own numbers offer a surprisingly candid answer. Every September, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) publishes its annual environmental report—usually read by fleet managers and regulators, rarely by the travelers whose choices it’s actually about. We’ve translated it into terms that matter to you: how clean is the ship you’re booking, how has that changed, and where does it still fall short.

CLIA’s 2026 report covers its member fleet of 45 cruise lines operating a combined 327 ships and roughly 692,000 berths. Every figure below is expressed as a share of that fleet, so you can judge for yourself how far cruising has come—and how much further it has to go.

Small ships, big share

If your idea of cruising involves fewer than a thousand fellow passengers, panoramic verandas, and a captain who might actually know your name, you’re not sailing on the fringe of the industry. Using CLIA’s own passenger-capacity categories, 34.5 percent of today’s fleet qualifies as a small ship under 1,000 passengers—a share expected to hold steady at roughly 33.6 percent through 2039. Small-ship cruising isn’t a boutique afterthought to the environmental story below; it’s more than a third of the fleet living it.

The moment your ship goes quiet in port

There’s a particular satisfaction in noticing your ship’s engines fall silent the moment it docks—no low hum, no faint diesel note drifting across the pool deck. That’s onshore power, sometimes called “cold ironing,” and it lets a docked ship draw electricity from the local grid instead of burning fuel at berth, cutting emissions there by as much as 98 percent.

Today, 59 percent of the CLIA fleet can do this, up from just 16.8 percent in 2018. Another 14.4 percent of ships are scheduled for retrofitting, and 11.9 percent of newbuilds on order will arrive already equipped—pointing toward 85.3 percent of the fleet by 2039. The one thing still holding this back isn’t the ships; it’s the ports. Only 40 worldwide currently offer a shore-power berth, though Europe’s Fit for 55 regulations will require major ports there to catch up by 2030.

What’s actually in the tank

Ask most travelers what fuel their ship runs on and you’ll get a shrug—understandably, since it’s rarely mentioned on the brochure. But it matters: 9.2 percent of the CLIA fleet now runs on multi-fuel engines capable of switching to zero- or near-zero-emissions fuels like methane or methanol as they become available, up from a single ship in 2018 and projected to reach 21.1 percent by 2039. Meanwhile, 29.4 percent of the fleet is fitted with selective catalytic reduction technology, which strips nitrogen oxide from exhaust to meet strict international air-quality standards—up sharply from 2.1 percent in 2018.

Where it all goes when you flush

It’s not the most glamorous line item in a travel magazine, but it’s the one many environmentally minded cruisers actually ask about: what happens to wastewater once it leaves the ship. Every vessel in the CLIA fleet treats it on board, and 76.2 percent now use Advanced Wastewater Treatment Systems that exceed international discharge standards—up from 41.6 percent in 2018. A further 37.9 percent meet the even stricter Baltic Sea standard, an eightfold jump from just 4.9 percent in 2018. Freshwater production, by contrast, is old news by cruising standards—most ships have made their own drinking water at sea for decades, and that hasn’t changed.

The little things: what happens to your dinner scraps

Every dish you don’t finish has to go somewhere, and increasingly it doesn’t go to landfill. Microbial digesters, which break down food waste on board, are now standard on 41.9 percent of the fleet, up from 31.5 percent in 2022. A smaller but growing number of ships—2.1 percent so far—use waste-to-energy gasification, converting rubbish into usable power for the ship itself.

So, does your small ship measure up?

None of this makes cruising carbon-neutral, and CLIA’s own leadership is candid that finishing the job—safe, affordable fuels available at scale—still depends on ports, governments, and energy suppliers catching up. But small-ship cruising has long had a head start here. Vessels built for a few hundred guests were never going to lead with scale; they’ve tended to lead with agility instead—quicker to retrofit, quicker to trial new systems, and built by operators for whom environmental care is often part of the brand story rather than an afterthought. The CLIA data bears this out in outline, if not by name: small ships make up more than a third of a fleet that’s rapidly adopting shore power, cleaner fuel, and advanced wastewater treatment across the board. If you’ve chosen small-ship cruising for its pace and intimacy, it’s fair to say you were ahead of this curve before the industry caught up to you.
