Saffron robes before sunrise

Before the sun has cleared the hills, the monks of Luang Prabang are already walking. A file of saffron robes passes residents kneeling with their offerings, and hardly anyone says a word. Some days later the same journey turns south onto the Mekong and drifts toward the temples of Angkor at the river’s own pace.

That dawn alms-giving appears early in Mekong Kingdoms: Laos to Angkor, one of 50 launch itineraries from Unforgettable Asia. The new luxury specialist, launched by Unforgettable Travel Company, designs private journeys by land and by water across 11 destinations in Asia. Its premise is simple enough. Travel slowly, meet the right people, and leave room for places most visitors would never think to look for.

Demand that tripled in three years

The timing reflects what the company has been hearing from its clients. Inquiries about Asia at Unforgettable Travel Company rose 226 percent between 2022 and 2025, and the new brand is its response. The opening collection covers Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Malaysia, Borneo and Indonesia, with further destinations due in late 2026 and through 2027.

“The premise of each of our itineraries is: what would we show someone if they were traveling with a brilliantly connected local friend? The answer might be an incredible person they should meet, a neighborhood they might never discover otherwise, or a restaurant they must try.”

Graham Carter, co-founder of Unforgettable Travel Company.

A playbook first tested on the Adriatic

Readers who have sailed the Dalmatian Coast may recognize the thinking. Unforgettable Asia is the Asian counterpart to Unforgettable Croatia, the award-winning specialist that has operated since 2015 and also counts Carter as a co-founder. In Croatia the company runs a fleet of six small ships, each carrying up to 36 guests. They cruise by day, drop anchor for swim stops, and spend their nights in port so guests can head ashore for dinner.

Some of the most memorable Croatian moments happen off the ship. Itineraries between Split and Dubrovnik now include a private oyster tasting on Banja Island, reached from the medieval town of Ston, where local farmers walk guests through the harvest. For groups who want the coast to themselves, the whole fleet is available for private charter from May through October 2027.

Asia asks the same questions of a far larger map. Who should a traveler meet? Where should they linger? The answers just happen to involve monks, tea merchants and dragons.

Five nights on the Mekong

For small-ship travelers, the two water-based journeys are where the collection earns attention. Mekong Kingdoms runs 14 nights from Luang Prabang to Siem Reap, and five of them are spent aboard the Bohème. Between Lao cooking and visits to weaving and pottery villages, there’s time for Kuang Si Falls, sunrise at Vat Phou in southern Laos and a waterborne look at the 4,000 Islands. The journey ends among the temples of Angkor.

Dragons at the end of the voyage

The Singapore, Bali, Komodo Yacht Expedition takes a wider arc over 13 nights. It opens with a city stay in Singapore, moves to four nights at a luxury rainforest camp in Ubud, and then puts guests aboard a small expedition ship for seven nights, full board. The route threads through Moyo and Satonda before reaching Komodo National Park, where the island’s famous dragons are met face to face. Guests disembark at Labuan Bajo.

The introductions you can’t arrange yourself

Away from the water, the collection leans heavily on people. In Kamakura, travelers can receive a personal blessing at Hasedera Temple from Misaka-san, a resident monk and television personality known locally as the “Merry Monk.” In Taiwan, they spend time with one of the country’s few female tea merchants before tasting the year’s champion oolong alongside local tea experts. In Singapore, collector Alvin Yapp opens The Intan, his private Peranakan home museum, after hours.

Other launch experiences run from cooking with village grandmothers in rural Japan to tracing Okinawa’s culture of longevity through its traditional food. Seoul brings private K-pop dance lessons and a session of personal color analysis.

“These are the moments that unlock the magic of traveling in Asia and they are what we seek to offer,” Carter said.

Specialists who’ve lived it

The planning team has lived and traveled widely across the region, and works with partners on the ground for current, first-hand advice on routing, hotels, guides and restaurants. Itineraries are designed for families traveling with toddlers or teenagers, for honeymooners, and for travelers drawn to the region’s culture, food and remoter corners. Hotels, guides, transfers, reservations and multi-stop logistics are handled as a single trip; complimentary concierge services and 24/7 support continue throughout.

Planning a slower passage

The full collection of journeys is at unforgettableasia.com. For anyone weighing the Mekong journey, the advice is the same one the monks of Luang Prabang follow each morning: start early, and don’t hurry.
