The third ship in Explora Journeys’ fleet passed a key pre-launch milestone
Before a new ship welcomes its first guests, it must first prove itself at sea. Explora Journeys has confirmed that Explora III successfully completed sea trials in the Mediterranean—and did so with flying colors, a detail that reflects well on the precision of the build program at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente shipyard near Genoa.
The trials were designed to validate the ship’s technical and operational performance across all critical systems before handover. With that work done, Explora III has returned to the shipyard for interior outfitting and final finishing ahead of her summer delivery.
A fleet at the halfway mark
The milestone carries broader significance for the brand. With all six ships in Explora Journeys’ planned fleet now at various stages of development—from active service through to future delivery—the line has reached the halfway point of its fleet expansion. The LNG distinction
Explora III is the first ship in the fleet to be powered by liquefied natural gas. LNG produces lower emissions than conventional marine fuel, reducing sulfur oxide and particulate output, and is widely regarded as one of the more practical transitional technologies available to the cruise industry as it works toward lower-carbon operations.
For Explora Journeys, the introduction of LNG on Explora III is framed as a concrete step toward the brand’s stated goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions across its maritime operations by 2050. Explora III’s inaugural season opens with a five-night Mediterranean Prelude Journey, departing Genoa on July 24, 2026 and arriving in Barcelona in time for her official naming ceremony on August 1. Two days later, a seven-night Maiden Journey takes her onward to Lisbon.
The remainder of her inaugural season is well-structured for travelers with an appetite for higher-latitude destinations: Norway, Iceland, and Greenland fill the northern summer, before an Atlantic crossing to New England and Canada as the season winds down.

Explora III follows the same design philosophy established by her fleet sisters—a relatively small guest capacity by industry standards, with an emphasis on suite-style accommodations, multiple dining venues, and a pace of travel that favors immersion over tick-box itinerary building. The brand positions itself in the upper tier of the luxury small-ship segment, and Explora III is built to the same specification.
For travelers already familiar with Explora I or Explora II, the addition of LNG propulsion is the most meaningful operational difference.
